A story of food and friendship. Takumi Cuisine is a family-owned Japanese restaurant in Decatur, Georgia known for its thoughtful cooking and loyal local following. Over time, the restaurant became not just a favorite place for the community, but a place of friendship for my family and I as well.
What began as a simple brand development project gradually grew into a broader effort to bring the restaurant’s visual identity into alignment with the warmth and character of the experience inside.
The Challenge
While Takumi had developed a strong reputation locally, its exterior storefront and visual identity no longer reflected the quality or personality of the restaurant. The presence along the street felt visually inconsistent and easy to overlook within a busy commercial corridor. The opportunity was to create a cohesive brand identity and environmental expression that would strengthen recognition, improve street visibility, and better reflect the spirit of the restaurant.
The Approach
The project began with brand development and identity design, establishing a visual language that balanced contemporary clarity with subtle Japanese influence. From there, the identity was extended across both digital and physical environments. The work included logo and illustration artwork, signage and environmental branding, storefront graphics, messaging and copywriting, photography and cinematography, motion graphics, and website design—creating a unified brand expression from the street to the screen.
The Result
The transformation aligned Takumi’s physical environment with the character of the restaurant itself, improving storefront visibility and creating a more recognizable presence within the neighborhood. By integrating brand identity with the built environment, the project helped turn the storefront into a clear expression of the restaurant’s personality and dining experience.
For me, the project reflects a belief that strong brands are not only communicated through graphics or messaging, but through the spaces people encounter every day. When identity, environment, and experience work together, a place can begin to tell its story the moment someone walks by.
