Angola Prison

Louisiana, USA

On Assignment for RZIM to document ministry and humanitarian work being done inside of Louisiana State Penitentiary. What was once America's most deadly prison is now, under the direction of Warden Burl Cain, home to multiple churches, seminary schools, and the country’s first prison hospice program run by volunteer inmates who care for their fellow terminally ill prisoners.

Warden Cain put Bibles in every cell and brought dignity back to every inmate. The prisoners I met were some of the kindest and gentlest men I have had the privilege of spending time with.

As we stood inside Death Row, Warden Cain told us with tears in his eyes that he sits down with every inmate for their last meal, and offers a prayer and to hold their hand during their execution. In his many years as warden only one has declined to have him there by their side.
